Why Do My Brakes Squeak

One of the most common car problems people experience is squeaky brakes. When your brakes screech its an awful sound. The good news is that sound is usually pretty simple to get rid of. And compared to many other auto repair services, fairly cheap. But dont let that make you think you can just ignore the screech. Your vehicles brakes can squeak for many reasons. Many of them are not serious. But some of them are. So what causes your brakes to squeak?

First off, its quite common for brakes to make noise. Most brakes use a cast-iron disc thats squeezed in between two brake pads. These pads are lined with a friction material and when conditions are right they rub together creating that high-pitched squeal. This squeal will vary depending on how fast youre going and how hard you press on the brakes.

Pads and Rotors

Another reason your brakes can squeal is because of problems with the brake pads and/or rotors. Both of these parts wear down over time and that will definitely lead to screeching sounds. Additionally, brake calipers can stick, which forces the pads to remain in contact with the rotors. This causes extra friction and the loud screech.

Bad Anti-Rattle Clips

Your brake pads are held in place with pad stays, as well as a small part called an anti-rattle clip. This clip helps prevent rattling or vibration. If this clip breaks or is worn out you will most likely hearing some squealing.

Insulation

Your brakes come with insulation shims straight from the manufacturer. When these shims wear down the back of the pad begins to rub against the caliper. When you replace your pads these shims also need to be replaced or the space needs to be insulated with silicone. Otherwise, your brakes will likely screech. If youre brakes have recently been replaced but theyre still making that screeching sound then most likely the shims were not replaced at the same time.

Keep Your Brakes Braking Smooth

What could be more annoying than the sound of squeaky brakes? Its awful, right? No one likes hearing his or her brakes screech. And the good news is you dont have to. If your brakes are making that terrible screeching sound then its time to get them checked out. The sound, as awful as it is, could be a warning sign. So its something you shouldnt ignore.

If your brakes are screeching then dont wait to have them inspected. It might be something as simple as brake dust. But it could also be something more serious like completely worn brake pads. Your brakes are obviously very important for your safety on the road.
